I got my 2001 Savage back from the dealer today. I know these people and I know they're not paying me lip service or blowing smoke. They had the bike torn apart looking at the petcock, carb and vent lines. They also checked to make sure the gas cap was venting. The bottom line is they found no malfunctioning component, but they did play around with the vent line at the carb and did find it slightly pinched, but not enough to cause gasoline to stop sucking from the tank. However, it's possible that the kink might have become more pronounced at higher speeds when more vacuum is present. In any event, I've ridden about twenty miles so far and it runs like new.
I've good 4,000 miles on the odometer total. What the heck, they changed my oil for me, so I didn't come away empty handed. Suzuki also gave them some advice for me to help eliminate stalling problems. Don't over fill the gas tank. The sloshing gas can get into the gas cap vent and cause a gum build up. Check the vent lines. Miles of vibration can move them around, among other things. A slight kink or a line going soft can constrict under pressure and stop gas from flowing.
I'll keep you posted if the stalling starts again...
